Train to retain

Building lubrication excellence with MLA and MLT

Why lubrication training is essential for reliability

Training in lubrication is not just about knowing what oil to use - it’s about understanding how lubrication impacts machine performance, energy efficiency, safety, and total cost of ownership. As machines become more sophisticated and production demands increase, having skilled lubrication professionals becomes a strategic advantage.

What is ICML and why does it matter?

ICML certificate
The International Council for Machinery Lubrication (ICML) is a globally recognised, non-profit organisation that sets the standard for certification in industrial lubrication and oil analysis. ICML’s certifications demonstrate a professional’s competence, knowledge, and ability to apply lubrication best practices in real-world situations.

What are the MLA and MLT certifications?

ICML offers several certifications, but the most recognised in the industry are:

Machine Lubricant Analyst (MLA)

MLA-certified professionals are trained to perform oil analysis, interpret results, and make data-driven maintenance decisions. There are three levels (I, II, and III), each building on the last, focusing on oil sampling, contamination control, failure investigation, and more.

Machinery Lubrication Technician (MLT)

MLT professionals are responsible for executing lubrication tasks safely and effectively. Their training includes lubricant application methods, inspection routines, contamination control, and storage handling. There are two levels (MLT I and II), and both align with ISO 18436-4 standards.

Is certification worth the investment?

Absolutely. Companies that invest in MLA or MLT training often report:

  • Reduced lubrication-related failures
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Improved equipment uptime
  • Enhanced safety and environmental compliance
  • A strong culture of ownership and accountability

“Education is the most powerful tool to unlock lubrication excellence.”

Question

Do I need MLA or MLT certification for my team?

It depends on your team’s responsibilities:

  • If your team performs oil sampling, analysis, or makes maintenance decisions, MLA is the right track.
  • If they’re responsible for lubrication tasks, applying greases/oils, or maintaining cleanliness and storage, MLT is ideal.

We’re happy to advise you based on your situation.

Training is the foundation of a world-class lubrication programme.

With MLA and MLT certification through ICML, your team gains the skills to reduce failures, extend asset life, and ensure consistent performance.
