PLIS - Plant Lubrication Identification Standard

The Plant Lubrication Identification Standard (PLIS) is a structured system for identifying, coding and labelling lubricants across an industrial facility. It ensures that each lubricant type is instantly recognisable, traceable, and handled correctly throughout its lifecycle – from delivery to application.

Purpose

The primary aim of PLIS is to eliminate cross-contamination, reduce handling errors, and support the implementation of the “6 Rights” of lubrication (right type, right time, right quantity, right place, right way, right condition).

Key Components

  • Colour Coding – Assigning unique colours to each lubricant type or viscosity grade to aid quick visual recognition.
  • Symbols and Icons – Pictograms indicating lubricant type (e.g., hydraulic oil, gear oil, grease).
  • Text Codes – Alphanumeric labels specifying brand, type, viscosity (ISO VG), and any additive information.
  • Container Labelling – Permanent, durable labels applied to bulk storage, intermediate containers, and point-of-use dispensing tools.
  • Hose and Fitting Identification – Matching codes and colours on transfer equipment to ensure correct lubricant routing.

Implementation Guidelines

  • Apply PLIS labelling at point of receipt for all new lubricants.
  • Ensure consistency across all storage locations, mobile carts, and machinery top-up points.
  • Use weatherproof and chemical-resistant materials for outdoor or high-exposure areas.
  • Train all maintenance staff in recognising and using the PLIS system.

Benefits

  • Prevents misapplication of lubricants.
  • Reduces downtime caused by incorrect oil or grease usage.
  • Improves auditability and compliance with quality standards such as ISO 4406 cleanliness targets.
  • Enhances workplace safety by ensuring hazardous materials are clearly identified.

Example

In a plant using hydraulic oil ISO VG 46 and gear oil ISO VG 220, PLIS may assign blue labels to hydraulic oil and yellow to gear oil. All storage tanks, drums, hoses, and dispensing cans for each oil would carry the corresponding colour and identification code.
