The Bowl

Your window into oil contamination and drain port integrity

The Luneta Bowl is a purpose-built sight glass that doubles as a Bottom Sediment and Water (BS&W) bowl, giving maintenance professionals a fast, accurate view of oil health at the drain port. Designed for durability, visibility, and chemical resistance, the Bowl provides a simple yet powerful way to monitor fluid integrity and protect critical equipment.

What makes the Bowl different from other sight glasses?

Unlike flat, hard-to-read sight glasses, the Bowl is made from impact-resistant Tritan™ – a crystal-clear, high-strength polymer known for its durability and chemical compatibility. Its unique contoured shape helps contaminants settle visibly at the bottom, enabling early detection of water, sediment, and sludge.

Is the Bowl suitable for all drain port applications?

Yes – the Bowl is designed specifically for static drain ports and works across a wide range of industrial applications, including gearboxes, reservoirs, and pumps. It's equipped with a rare-earth magnet on the brass drain plug, which attracts and traps wear debris, helping to remove metal particles before they circulate further through the system.

However, it is not suitable for use on pressurised, high-vibration, or moving surfaces. Always ensure that the installation site meets the recommended conditions.

How do I install The Bowl correctly?

Installing the Bowl is simple, but must be done with care to ensure safety and performance:

  • Inspect and clean all components before installation
  • Remove the red cap from the magnet on the drain valve
  • Apply thread-sealing paste (not Teflon tape) to all threaded parts
  • Use a 2-1/8" wrench for the adapter and 9/16" for the drain valve
  • Do not overtighten once the hex bottoms out

Important:

Never tighten the Bowl using the plastic hex, and avoid excessive torque to prevent cracking.

How should I use and maintain the Bowl?

  • Daily visual checks: Monitor for signs of water, sediment, or wear debris
  • Drain regularly: Open the valve to purge contaminants; allow clean oil to refill the Bowl
  • Do not sample from the Bowl: Oil in the Bowl is not representative of circulating oil
  • Avoid solvents: Use only cleaning agents compatible with Tritan™, Viton®, and brass

Magnetic Drain Valve

Spiral Lock Open Push and rotate to open the valve and facilitate quick purges of sediment. When fully rotated, the valve locks in the open position, which is useful for draining the entire reservoir. Rotate the opposite direction to close. Heavy duty spring offers resistance and protects the valve from accidentally opening.

FAQ

FAQ about The Bowl

FAQ - Bowl

What is a Bowl?

The Luneta Bowl is a bottom sediment and water (BS&W) bowl that doubles as a Sight Glass. You can also purge and inspect your lubricant for ferrous debris at the same time.

How do I purge water/sludge?

Purging with the Bowl is easy. Simply press upwards on the arms of the drain valve. Push and twist and it will lock in the open position. When the Bowl has completely refilled with clean oil, press gently on the arms to turn them, and the drain will snap shut.

Can the Bowl handle high pressure or temperature?

The Bowl is rated for systems up to 65 psi (4.48 bar) and oil temperatures between -29°C and 93°C. It is UV resistant for outdoor applications but should not be used on high-pressure or mobile machinery, or where vibration or shock loads are present.

Can I sample from the Bowl?

We do not recommend sampling from the bowl as it will naturally collect water and other contaminants. It does not paint an accurate picture of the condition of the oil that is actively contacting your gears.

Can I use high viscosity oil with the 3/8" model?

While possible, we do not recommend using high viscosity oil in conjunction with the 3/8” model. It is possible for the oil to form a seal atop the bowl, preventing proper oil flow within the Bowl.

Why choose the Bowl?

The Luneta Bowl is more than a drain port accessory – it's an early warning system for fluid contamination. By improving visibility and making routine inspections easier, it helps extend oil life, reduce wear, and keep your equipment running reliably.
